Why the Dalai Lama’s Wisdom Is Relevant to our Modern World

When I started my spiritual journey more than 20 years ago I was hungry to learn more about the transcendental, the metaphysical, the unknown or the untoward. However, I learned very quickly that it wasn’t about having out-of-body experiences, seeing light or feeling out of this world. Living in the modern world boiled down some basic principles.

On my bookshelf, I have an old copy of the Dalai Lama’s Ancient Wisdom, Modern World. It was the first book I read that quenched my thirst for spiritual knowledge. From a young age, I thought there was something out of place with just living in the material world. There had to be more to life.

When I read the Dalai Lama’s book; the ethics of compassion for humankind and the need for discernment and our universal responsibility I was profoundly struck with a realisation. It dawned on me how much of our minds can be occupied with guilt, worry, frustration and disappointment which basically drags us down and take us away from being out true selves. The Dalai Lama explains how important it is to train our minds so that we become loving, kind and compassionate to each other. Of course, living in this material world I try and practice the Dalai Lama’s ethics as much as possible to this day.
