Ever tried to meditate while you dance?

You may think dance and meditation hardly go hand in hand. It’s hardly the perception most people have of sitting silently in a darkened room. Yet meditation can be expressed through dance, walking and movement.

When I attended this strangely billed “alternative Saturday night out”, I didn’t have high expectations. I thought to myself I must go with an open mind, although at the back of my mind, admittedly I did harbour some vision of it turning out to be a room full of incense swinging people, mesmerised by some floaty, dreamy music.

What I discovered was that people were able to get in tune and express themselves in dance like you wouldn’t normally see if you went to a nightclub where most people wear the facade of looking good or cool. This wasn’t a night for ageing hippies rather an alternative club night out for young people who were on their own journeys of self-discovery.

Dance and yoga meditation is good for those with an active mindThe old perception of sitting silently in a darkened room may not appeal to many people especially those who prefer to be active and discover they get restless sitting in one spot for a 20 minute meditation session. Many spiritual gurus ranging from Osho to Gurdjeiff to modern day master Thich Nhat Hanh have created a range of meditations that evolve from movement.

Moving meditations are ideal for those with an active temperament. Dynamic meditation is a famous Osho meditation as the writer and presenter, Louis Theroux went to explore in one of his recent documentaries. Gurdjeiff has evolved dance movements and Thich Nhat Hanh’s emphasis is on a walking meditation.
