Can I meditate anywhere?
Should I be practising in a very quiet spot? What if there is constant noise? Will I feel more relaxed and energised meditating on a hill or an open green space?
Contrary to popular opinion, you can meditate anywhere; on the tube, on the bus, in the park. Please note this does come with practice!
Each person is surrounded by an electro-magnetic field which is very sensitive to external influences.
Closing your eyes on the tube to shut out the negative energy may be the perfectly tranquil way to quieten your mind to prepare yourself for a busy day.
Beginners’ Luck
But if as a beginner you are still affected for instance, by people pushing the morning’s Financial Times in your face, or tapping into their Blackberry, or worse still, a tube commuter who has their i-Pod on loud, you’re not going to do yourself any justice.
A quiet space at a Buddhist temple, or going to a group meditation is very fulfilling. Explore, be creative and seek out the practice that you feel connected with. You could be out walking in the park, jogging or sitting in a cafe watching the world go by, the most important point is to notice if you are doing this with awareness.
Mindful Meditation
A few years ago, I went to a yoga and meditation workshop by a young, effervescent and dynamic Indian yogi, Bharat Thakur, who said something which to this very day strikes a chord with me: meditate with every move you make.
Whether you’re doing the household chores, cooking, weeding the garden, or playing tennis if every movement you make, every action you take is done mindfully, in an ideal situation, you are in a blissfully meditative state, 99 percent of the time!
