5 main types of meditation

So you’ve decided to take up meditation. What’s out there? Where do you start?

Meditation is a huge topic so I have my work cut out explaining the different types in simple terms.

Beginners discovering meditation will either explore or feel daunted by it all. If you do feel a little nervous, my advice is try out a number of different practices by going to centres with dedicated teachers and find what works for you.

Select one meditation practice you enjoy and another that feels uncomfortable. If you’re keen to push yourself out of your comfort zone, the uncomfortable form of meditation is likely to challenge you and take you to the next level sooner.

Explore your boundaries. If you feel adventurous, challenge yourself; you will become more stress-free, alive and alert sooner. If on the other hand, you feel a little sceptical, stay with what you feel comfortable for a while.

Better still, find a meditation teacher who can guide you from scratch. As you begin to grow more confident, vary your practices, for instance, your morning meditation may be a practice of mindfulness and your evening meditation a more calming reflective one to wind down at the end of a stressful busy day.

Remember, there are no strict rules to follow although certain types of meditations follow structured breathing patterns. At the end of the day, it’s your enquiry that will lead you to where you want to be.

According to the Buddhist tradition, there are more than a 1000 forms of meditation.

Meditation itself is not a religion. However, all major religions use some form of meditation to get closer to God. This spiritual level of meditation exists in Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism, Islam and Christianity. Similarly, you may come across meditation in a flourishing wave of “new religions”, for instance, the Baha’i faith or the Brahma Kumaris.

Below are a few forms of meditation for you to check out.

  • Buddhist meditation
  • Zen meditation
  • Tao meditation
  • Transcendental meditation
  • Vipassana meditation

Surat Shabd Yoga has three components –I. Sumiran, repetition of holy name. This resembles mantra yoga. 2. Dhyan or contemplation of holy form resembles Dhyan yoga. 3. Bhajan, practice of listening internal sounds. This practice resembles nad yoga.
